Who are the allies of queer Muslims?

This article aims to locate the forces inspiring emergence of pro-queer religious activism in contemporary Indonesia elucidate how and why Islamic values are mobilised by a minority Muslim actors for defence sexual rights. Based on ethnographic research conducted between 2017 2018, introduces range stakeholders, including leaders, activists scholars supporting LGBTIQ+ rights, as ‘allies’ minorities. I begin exploring discussions around Progressive Islam subsequently focus my interlocutors’ own definitions term. Drawing upon interviews participant observations at events bringing together religion, gender sexuality, this identifies three key behind activism. These include previous membership Indonesian Student Movement (Pergerakan Mahasiswa Indonesia), inter-faith dialogue, Gusdurian Network (Jaringan Gusdurian). Participation these groups emerges force shaping allies’ conceptualisation progressive making possible but not unavoidable.
